June 16, 2021 will mark the 25th anniversary of the racially motivated attack on Noël Martin. On this occasion, Blankenfelde-Mahlow is celebrating a week of remembrance for diversity and against racism together with the state of Brandenburg, Opferperspektive e.V. and many other actors.

The theme week should not only serve to pause and remember, but also create spaces for exchange.

Background
The life of Noël Martin changed forever on June 16, 1996. On this day, Noël was verbally threatened by right-wing youths on the Mahlower Bahnhofsvorplatz. He escaped in his car, but was followed. While overtaking, the two perpetrators threw a large stone into Noël's moving car. He lost control of his vehicle. Since then, the self-confident and proud man was paralyzed from the neck down and completely dependent on the help of other people.
A decisive event for Noël Martin, but also for our community. Much has changed since then. The experience of the right-wing extremist attack on Noel Martin has burned itself into the minds of the community. Every year on June 16, the community commemorated the terrible event as part of a memorial service on site.
On the 25th anniversary of the attack, we are taking a critical look at racism in everyday life as part of a theme week - and we are committed to treating diversity in our society with respect. At the same time we would like to remember the admirable affirmation of life and strength with which Noël Martin mastered this difficult fate, with which he can be an example to all of us.

Prepared jointly by those affected by racism and the Protestant communities in Mahlow and Blankenfelde, the Evangelical Free Church Community in Blankenfelde and the Catholic community in Blankenfelde-Mahlow.

Reading: Who was Noël Martin?

Book reading from Noël Martin's autobiography Call it: my life. The autobiography describes an extraordinary life very personally and ruthlessly. On this evening, our guests Carola Lotzenburger and Michael Ferguson, companions of Noël Martin, are happy to tell about their diverse experiences with Noël. Then there is time for discussions.

It is the 25th anniversary of the racist attack on Noël Martin. This tragic event is an occasion to commemorate victims of right-wing violence.

Movie night: "Next stop: Fruitvale Station"

The film tells of the murder of a young African American by a white policeman. It impressively follows the man's last hours and shows the subliminal racism that surrounds him.

Panel discussion: After the attack.
Sat, June 19, 2:30 p.m. - 6 p.m., Mahlow clubhouse and online via Zoom
Interview with contemporary witnesses about the consequences of the attack on Noël Martin, right-wing violence in the region in the 1990s and its social breeding ground - and about commemoration, commitment and solidarity. Two-part panel discussion (with a break).
After the podium event, the action week will end together with music and time for exchange.

Actionbound: "Boo! The spirit of the 90s"
Free use via the “Actionbound” app, the QR code for the Bound will be published on the jugendarbeit-bm.com website from June 13th. The Actionbound is an app-based scavenger hunt created by the Jugendarbeit team. Places and events that are important for a local discussion of racism and the promotion of civil courage are “hunted”.

Exhibition: No beautiful country - victims of right-wing violence in Brandenburg
Since 1990, 23 people in Brandenburg have lost their lives as a result of right-wing, racist and anti-Semitic violence. Their fate, the deeds and the legal processing are documented in detail in the exhibition.
Opening times: always two hours before the start of the event
In the center of Mahlow we are showing an outdoor exhibition on the victims of right-wing violence with photo collages of the crime scenes for the entire week of the action.
